Birch Polypore
To understand the Birch Polypore you need to understand its characteristics. Scientifically known as Fomitopsis betulina the fresh Birch Polypore is a fungus that grows almost exclusively on birch trees. The caps are creamy white to light brown, white to beige or tan and darken with age. The fungus has a hoof or bracket shape and the cap is 10-20cm in diameter.
The upper side of the Birch Polypore is smooth and leathery and milky coffee in color. The underside is white with many pores and has a characteristic look. One of the most distinctive features of this mushroom is its strong fungusy smell. Found on dead and decaying birch trees the Birch Polypore is common in forests where birch trees grow.
Knowing these physical characteristics is important for mushroom foragers. The Birch Polypore is easy to identify in the wild with its shape, color and texture. But as with any wild mushroom, accurate identification is key to a safe and successful foraging.
Medicinal Properties of Birch Polypore
The Birch Polypore is a powerful medicinal mushroom. It has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-parasitic and immune supporting properties. Its antiviral properties are particularly strong against many viruses including HIV and the flu.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Birch Polypore are due to triterpene acids which reduce inflammation. The nutrients it accumulates from the birch tree enhance the medicinal benefits. Historically Birch Polypore was used as a laxative to expel whipworms so it was used in traditional medicine.
Modern uses of Birch Polypore use its antibiotic properties especially the piptamine which is effective against E. coli. The fibrous outer layer of Birch Polypore can also be used as a natural bandage which is antiseptic and clotting. All these medicinal properties make Birch Polypore a valuable resource in natural medicine.
Other uses of Birch Polypore
Birch Polypore has other uses beyond medicinal properties. Historically strips from the underside of Birch Polypore were used in barber shops as a razor strop to sharpen cut throat razors. This use shows the unique properties of Birch Polypore, perfect for sharpening razors.
It was also used as a very fine emery cloth for polishing metals and making ink blotters. Birch Polypore’s fibrous texture and durability makes it good for such use. It was also used as a base for mounting insects in collections, showing its many uses.
Historical and practical uses of Birch Polypore shows its versatility and value in many fields. From tools to scientific purposes, Birch Polypore uses are as many as they are interesting.
Birch Polypore vs Other Medicinal Mushrooms
When compared to other medicinal mushrooms, each has its own benefits. Turkey Tails mushrooms for example has a ringed appearance and was used in traditional medicine to treat fungal infections and cancer. Modern studies show that Turkey Tail can have anti-tumor effects especially in breast cancer and has a proprietary formulation called Polysaccharide-K (PSK) approved for cancer treatment in Japan.
Turkey Tails has anti-tumor effects, Birch Polypore has anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. These complementary properties makes Birch Polypore a great addition to a holistic health program, working with other medicinal mushrooms for overall well being.
Knowing the properties of each medicinal mushroom makes us more informed and effective in using these natural resources. By combining the strengths of different medicinal mushroom fungi we can have a total approach to health and healing.
